Where we live shapes our health, our work, our relationships and our daily mood. Yet most people choose a place to live from a short list of practical criteria. Placealgo helps people evaluate the places they’re considering moving to. It combines a questionnaire on personal preferences with an analysis of the compatibility between a person’s name and the names of places.

Where it comes from

Placealgo draws on my studies in urban and regional planning and architecture, and on my own life across nine countries and dozens of homes. It grew out of earlier work designing compatibility systems for place-based living.

Where it stands

The site is live, with three ways to use it: a complete compatibility test, a name-only test and a basic test. The first version of the algorithm works. More research is needed to refine it and validate its results.

Part of a larger family

Placealgo is the second of three compatibility algorithms, alongside Compalgo for romantic partners and a planned algorithm for career choices. Together they cover who you live with, where you live and what work you do.

What would help

Research partners, technical partners to develop the product, and funding for the research.
